1.Who we are

Kịrịkẹnị (kirikeni.com) is operated by Greencrest Integrated Services Ltd, Abuja, Nigeria (“we”, “us”). We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.

You can reach us about anything in this policy at hello@kirikeni.com or +234 806 824 6347.

2.What we collect

You can search, browse and use the Learn page without giving us any personal data. We do not ask for your date of birth or gender. We collect personal data only in these situations:

  • Account: your email address and password, handled by Supabase Auth, our authentication provider. We never see your password. If you sign in with Google, we also receive the name, email address and profile picture Google shares with us.
  • Display name: optional. If you add one, it is shown publicly next to your contributions, comments, questions and answers.
  • Contributions: words, corrections, phrases, cultural notes and pronunciation recordings you submit. They are public once submitted so the community can review them. Rejected recordings are deleted.
  • Discussion: comments on contributions, and the questions and answers you post. These are public.
  • Study tools: your favourites, flashcards, decks and quiz results. These are private, except a deck you choose to share by link.
  • Notifications: the notices we show you on the site, for example when a contribution of yours is reviewed.
  • Messages: your name, email address and message when you use the contact, volunteer or partnership forms, and your organisation name for partnership enquiries.
  • Donations: your name, email address and the amount you give. Card and bank details are handled by Bachs, our payment provider, and never by Kịrịkẹnị.
  • Technical data: the sign-in cookies described in our Cookie Policy, and the standard logs our hosting providers keep (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) to run and secure the service.

We do not use advertising, we do not use analytics or tracking cookies, and we do not sell personal data.

3.Why we use it, and on what basis

  • To provide your account and its features, such as favourites, flashcards and contributing. This is necessary to perform our agreement with you.
  • To review, publish and credit your contributions. This is necessary to perform our agreement with you, and is described in our Terms of Use.
  • To process donations and keep financial records. This is necessary to perform our agreement with you and to meet legal obligations.
  • To reply to messages and enquiries. This is based on your consent, given when you send the message.
  • To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems. This is in our legitimate interest in running a reliable dictionary.
  • To meet legal obligations, where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

4.What is public

Submitted contributions, comments, questions, answers, shared decks and your display name, if you set one, are public and can be seen by anyone. Your email address is never shown publicly.

Approved contributions become part of the dictionary. If you delete your account, your published contributions and answers stay on the site without your name, as explained in our Terms of Use.

5.Who processes it for us

We share personal data only with service providers who process it on our behalf and under our instructions:

  • Supabase, which provides our database, sign-in and file storage. Its servers for Kịrịkẹnị are in the European Union (Ireland).
  • Our website hosting provider, which serves the site and keeps short-term technical logs.
  • Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
  • Our email provider, when we reply to you.
  • Bachs, which processes donation payments.

Because some of these providers store data outside Nigeria, your data may be transferred abroad. We rely on the safeguards permitted by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, such as the provider’s contractual commitments, for these transfers.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.

6.How long we keep it

  • Account, profile and study data: for as long as your account is open. You can delete your account at any time in Settings. Deletion is immediate: your account, favourites, flashcards, decks, quiz results, notifications, votes and comments are removed. Published contributions and answers stay without your name.
  • Donation records: for as long as the law requires us to keep financial records.
  • Messages and enquiries: for as long as we need to deal with them, and no longer than two years after our last exchange.
  • Technical logs: for the short periods set by our hosting providers.
  • Approved contributions: as part of the dictionary, as described above.

7.Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:

  • be told how your personal data is used, which is the purpose of this policy;
  • ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct data that is wrong or incomplete;
  • ask us to delete your data, or to restrict how we use it;
  • object to our use of your data based on legitimate interests;
  • receive your data in a commonly used format, or have it sent to another provider;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on consent.

To use any of these rights, email hello@kirikeni.com. We will reply within the time the law allows. You can edit your display name from your dashboard and delete your account in Settings.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

8.Children

Anyone can use the dictionary without an account. Accounts are for people aged 18 and over, or younger people who have the consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal data without that consent, contact us and we will delete it.

9.Security

All traffic to Kịrịkẹnị is encrypted. Access to personal data in our database is restricted by row-level security rules, so that users can only reach their own private data and only administrators can read messages and enquiries. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell affected users and the NDPC if a breach puts your data at risk, as the law requires.

10.Changes to this policy

If we change how we use personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes we will also tell account holders by email or on the site.
