History
The story of Abuloma.
Wakirike USA records that the people of Abuloma first lived on the part of Port Harcourt now known as Borikiri. Their ancestor, Obulo, is said to have befriended Opuogulaya of Ogoloma, and the two peoples have been linked ever since. When exactly Abuloma moved to its present site is not known.
The dictionary calls Àbùlómà a “town in Okrika division situated at the mainland near Port Harcourt” and adds that “it is bilingual”. Abuloma’s own ancestral language, Obulom, is not an Ijaw language at all but one of the Central Delta languages, and it is now considered threatened.
Abuloma became a district in 1956 and today lies in Port Harcourt Local Government Area. Its ruler is styled Obeomomu-Odu. Federal Government Girls’ College, Abuloma, moved to the town in 1976.
Founding stories come from oral tradition and differ between sources.
