Where the words come from

A written record, checked by speakers.

  1. The source

    Levi Sika’s Okrika Word Book

Almost every entry comes from the word book Levi Sika finished in 1995: nearly five thousand words with tone marks, parts of speech and English glosses, rebuilt for the web in 2026.

  2. The checks

    Nothing goes live unreviewed

New words, corrections, recordings and notes wait in a public queue where members vote and comment. A moderator approves or declines each one and can say why.

    See the review queue
  3. The gaps

    16 entries still being checked

Some tone marks were lost when the original was digitised, so those entries are flagged until a speaker confirms them. No entry has a recording yet.

Questions

Frequently asked.

All questions
Is Kịrịkẹnị free?
Yes. Searching, browsing and the Learn page are free and need no account. A free account lets you save favourites, build flashcards and contribute.
Do I need to type the tone marks and dots?
No. Search ignores them, so typing "so" finds só, sò and sọ́. Exact matches are listed first.
How do I add or correct a word?
Sign in and open Contribute. You can add a new word, suggest a change to an existing entry, record a pronunciation or write a cultural note.
Is there a mobile app?
Not yet. iOS and Android apps will be built once the website is complete. Until then the site is built to work well on a phone.

Know a word that isn’t here?

Add it, record how it sounds, or correct an entry that’s wrong. Searching is free, adding is free, and every change is checked before it goes live.
